How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

An intense, invisible light beam targets hair follicles with heat, ultimately destroying them at the root. The laser is able to focus on follicles by zeroing in on the hair’s melanin, the dark color of the hair. Since laser hair removal targets melanin, it works best on people with dark hair and light skin.

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

Most patients say the procedure feels like a rubber band snapping on their skin.

What Happens During a Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

The hair in the target location will be shaved. Patients are asked to wear goggles to protect their eyes. Laser settings are customized for your skin and hair color, the hair’s thickness, and the area being treated. It’s common to see some redness after the treatment, which usually fades in about a day. It’s important to keep the treated area shielded from direct sunlight for at least a week after each procedure.

Can the Laser Hair Removal Treatment Be Done on Any Skin Tone or Hair Color?

People with red, gray or blonde hair can not be treated in our office. We do not do any laser hair reduction treatments on patients with blonde or gray hair. Our Sciton BBL device is safe for darker skin types. We also offer the Sciton ClearScan YAG® laser, which provides the optimal balance between safely treating all skin types and effectively removing unwanted hair. The treatment is safe for darker skin types.

How Do I Prepare for My Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

Avoid sun exposure/tanning for at least 2 weeks before your treatment. About a week ahead of time, discontinue the use of any skincare products like retinol or glycolic acid that make your skin sensitive to light. It’s OK to shave unwanted hair, but do not pluck. We want hair to be below the skin in the follicles at the time of treatment.

How Long Does a Laser Hair Removal Treatment Take?

The time for laser hair removal will vary depending on the size of the treatment area and the provider.

How Many Treatments Are Needed for Laser Hair Removal?

A few follow-up treatments are required at 4 to 6-week intervals since only hairs in the growth phase are affected. Money-saving hair removal treatment packages are available for your convenience.

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?

Laser hair removal provides permanent results because the hair follicles that are destroyed do not grow back. For the most complete results, a series of treatments must be performed at regular intervals to ensure all hair follicles are treated during their active growth cycle.
